Rules for choosing wear-again bridesmaid dresses

How to Choose a Bridesmaid Dress

Recently, Better.tv did a short video segment with Julie Raimondi, the editor-in-chief of Brides.com, about how to choose bridesmaid dresses that can be worn again. She listed four simple rules, which I will summarize here, but I encourage you to watch the video to see some real-life examples of great bridesmaid dresses. She even shows tips on how to accessorize those dresses for non-wedding occasions. This is a fabulous video for the budget-conscious bridesmaid

Rules for choosing bridesmaid dresses that can be worn again:

  1. Dress material and color matter! Taffeta and satin look great for bridesmaid dresses, but that's just it. They look like bridesmaid dresses. Similarly, bright colors look great in pictures, but they also look like bridesmaid dresses. Julie recommends materials like silk chiffon or neutral colors like grey, which are both "in" and appropriate.
  2. Choose patterns. Patterns were not part of the typical bridesmaid dress arsenal until a few years ago. Now, they are getting their day in the sun. How about polka dots or flower prints? Fun and pretty for weddings but also great for a night out on the town. Skip the plain, single-colored dress.
  3. Find dresses with "structure." If you do go with a solid color dress, try to find one with an interesting shape. Look for asymmetrical necklines or one-shoulder dresses. These interesting dresses can be worn at many different occasions.
  4. Pick dresses with details. It doesn't have to be intricate beadwork, but look for bridesmaid dresses with flirty necklines, not just the regular strapless look. Have you considered ruffles? Julie tells us those are definitely popular this year.

What other rules would you add to this list? Now that you know the rules, head over to Shiny Orb to find bridesmaid dresses you can wear again!
